  • Numify’s App Store plans are $5.99 a week, $29.99 for 3 months or $69.99 a year, and reviewers quote $59.99 a year at signup. MyFoodBuddy is $39.99 a year or $7.99 a month.
  • Most recent Numify reviews describe a long setup quiz that ends at a paywall with no free option. MyFoodBuddy gives 7 days free with everything.

Numify vs MyFoodBuddy, feature by feature

Calorie Counter by Numify and MyFoodBuddy overlap more than most pairs. Both let you describe a meal in text or by voice and let AI work out the numbers. Numify adds photo logging, meal plans and an Android and Mac version. MyFoodBuddy adds editing by chat and a fixed set of nutrition databases. The table uses Numify’s App Store listing, terms and Google Play page.

Two rows matter most. Where the food data comes from, because Numify’s own terms describe a database that is partly written by ChatGPT and open to user edits. And how you start, because Numify asks for a subscription at the end of setup while MyFoodBuddy starts with a 7-day free trial.

How Numify works day to day

Calorie Counter by Numify launched on the App Store in January 2024 and was on version 1.26 in October 2026. Its maker, Municorn Limited, also sells a separate Numify fasting app and step counter. Numify has no website of its own, so this flow comes from its listing and terms.

  1. Setup quiz. Questions about your body, activity and goal. Numify sets a calorie budget using the Cunningham equation, per its Google Play listing, then shows the subscription screen.
  2. Log a meal. Take a photo, type into a Describe your meal box, use voice input, scan a barcode or nutrition label, or search the database.
  3. Watch your budget. A daily dashboard and home screen widgets show calories, macros, water and activity.
  4. Follow a plan. Low-Calorie, Keto, Vegan, Mediterranean or High-Protein meal plans, recipes, and an AI coach for meal ideas and workout tips.
  5. Track progress. Weight charts, with workouts, steps, weight and activity synced from Apple Health.

How MyFoodBuddy works day to day

MyFoodBuddy is a chat from start to finish, with an AI coach named Fiona.

  1. Say what you ate. Type or speak one sentence, like “two eggs, toast with butter and a coffee with oat milk.”
  2. Fiona logs it. She splits the sentence into foods and amounts, looks each one up and shows a card with calories, protein, carbs and fat. Tap Log it.
  3. Use your own numbers. Say “300 calories of chicken nuggets” and your number is the one logged.
  4. Fix anything by chatting. Tell Fiona what changed and she updates the entry.
  5. Scan packaged food. The barcode scanner reads Open Food Facts, with USDA branded data as a backup.
  6. Keep going. Apple Health sync for weight, sleep, steps and workouts, streaks, and friends with leaderboards.

How much does Numify cost compared to MyFoodBuddy

Numify’s App Store page has a subscriptions shelf with the period written on each plan, which is more than most apps in this category show. The in-app purchase list also has items without a stated period, and reviewers quote slightly different prices on the signup screen.

At $59.99 to $69.99 a year, Numify costs $20 to $30 more than MyFoodBuddy for a year. Some reviewers also describe extra paid offers after subscribing, including a separate charge for AI features and a paid PDF, so check what the plan includes before you pay.

Can you use Numify without paying

Not in practice, according to recent reviews. Numify is listed as free with in-app purchases, but its terms say the subscription is what lets you log food on multiple days, track macros and use the barcode scanner.

Reviewers describe the same experience again and again in September and October 2026. You answer a long quiz, some said 10 to 15 minutes, and then reach a payment screen with no free option. Many titled their reviews “Not free”. One reviewer counted a spin-the-wheel discount and several more offers before reaching the tracker.

MyFoodBuddy also has no free tier, but it says so up front and starts with 7 free days of everything before you pay $39.99 a year or $7.99 a month.

Where does Numify get its food data

Numify’s terms of use answer this directly in a section called Database and AI Use. They say the food database combines information from FoodData Central, the USDA database, with information generated by ChatGPT. They add that any user can contribute to or edit the nutrition data, that it has not been reviewed by people with the expertise to make it reliable, and that Numify does not vouch for its accuracy.

Reviewers notice the effects. In 2026 they reported scans that added carbs and calories not on the label, photo scans that named the wrong dish, missing common foods, and values that could not be edited to match a label. A 2024 reviewer typed a yogurt with 130 calories and 18 grams of protein and said the app replaced it with a standard 100 gram serving. Numify replied that it was working on direct calorie and macro edits.

MyFoodBuddy also uses AI, to read your sentence and work out portions, and takes the nutrition values from USDA FoodData Central, Edamam and Open Food Facts when there is a match. If you state a number, your number wins. If nothing matches, the card shows the AI estimate before anything is saved, and every entry can be edited by chat. We have no test data comparing accuracy, so we will not claim ours is better. See our About page.

Who makes Numify, and is it legit

Calorie Counter by Numify is published by Municorn Limited, based in Limassol, Cyprus. Municorn’s website lists its fax, document scanner and e-signature apps, and on the App Store it also sells a fasting tracker, a step counter, a period tracker and a call recorder.

  • Ratings. About 42,300 US App Store ratings averaging 4.7, and about 1,300 Google Play reviews averaging 4.5.
  • Terms. US users agree to binding individual arbitration and give up class actions, with an opt-out described in section 16.
  • Privacy label. The App Store label says identifiers, usage data and diagnostics may be used to track you across other companies’ apps and websites.
  • Support. cc-support@municorn.com, and Municorn replies to many reviews.

So it is a real, registered company with published terms and an active app. Whether it suits you depends on the paywall and data questions above.

Is Numify worth it, and what do reviews say

Written reviews are much more critical than the 4.7 average. Of the 100 most recent written US App Store reviews we read on October 18, 2026 (posted August to October 2026), 47 were one-star and 30 were five-star.

  • What people like. A clean, simple interface, widgets, logging by photo, barcode scanning that works for many, and gram-based portions.
  • The paywall. Most one- and two-star reviews were about the quiz ending in a payment screen.
  • Data. Missing common foods, wrong scan values and limited editing.
  • Missing numbers. Several asked for fiber, net carbs and vitamins. One said their copy lacked sodium tracking that another user’s copy had.
  • Usability. Duplicate entries that were hard to delete, recipe building that is hard to undo, and layouts that break with large text.

Numify is worth a look if you want photo and voice logging with diet plans on several devices and accept paying from the start. If the paywall or the ChatGPT-assisted database puts you off, that is the honest reason to look elsewhere.
