Eato vs MyFoodBuddy, feature by feature
Eato and MyFoodBuddy are both AI calorie trackers, and both cut down on searching a database. Eato leads with the camera, snap your plate and it estimates the calories, and adds meal plans. MyFoodBuddy leads with words, text or say what you ate and an AI coach named Fiona logs it.
| Feature | MyFoodBuddy | Eato |
|---|---|---|
| Log by typing a normal sentence | Several foods in one sentence | Describe Food. Type what you ate and AI estimates calories and nutrients |
| Log by talking | Not listed publicly | |
| Log from a photo | AI Scan, one plate or bowl per photo works best | |
| Barcode scanner | Plus a food label scanner | |
| Search a food database | Saved foods and meals. No database search screen, you describe the food instead | 1.9 million+ foods |
| Fix entries by chatting | Tell Fiona what changed and she updates the entry | Not listed publicly |
| Protein, carbs and fat | Including net carbs and fiber | |
| Vitamins and minerals | 20+ vitamins and minerals | Sodium, cholesterol, vitamins and more in the stats view |
| Personal calorie and macro goals | Set from your age, weight, height and activity, editable | Calorie budget from your profile, with editable macro ratios |
| Goals that adjust to your real progress | Recalculated when you update your body data, and steps add a calorie bonus | |
| Weight tracking | Log it in chat or sync from Apple Health | |
| AI coach you can ask questions | Fiona answers questions about your food, goals and progress | AI feedback on your nutrient balance. Not described as a coach you chat with |
| Meal plans or recipes | A weekly meal plan with recipes and a grocery list | |
| Apple Health sync | Weight, sleep, steps and workouts | Steps and workouts |
| Android app | iPhone only | |
| Free version | Not listed publicly | |
| Free trial of the paid plan | 7 days | 7 days, then the yearly plan |
Two rows matter most. Log from a photo is Eato’s headline feature and MyFoodBuddy does not have it. Fix entries by chatting is where MyFoodBuddy is different. In Eato you edit a food, its serving or its ingredients, while in MyFoodBuddy you tell Fiona what changed.

How Eato works day to day
Eato is made by Enerjoy Pte. Ltd., a Singapore wellness app studio that also makes ShutEye and JustFit. Here is the routine as Eato’s site and help center describe it.
- Get a calorie budget. Eato sets a daily target from your age, weight, height, sex, goal and activity. You can adjust the budget and your macro ratios.
- Log a meal. Tap a meal and choose AI Scan for a photo, Scan Barcode, food label reading, a manual search of 1.9 million+ foods, or Describe Food to type what you ate.
- Review and edit. After an AI scan you can add or remove ingredients and change servings.
- Move for a bonus. Steps from Apple Health and workouts you log add calories back to your budget.
- Follow the plan. The Meal Plan tab has a weekly plan of breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks that you can follow or swap, with a grocery list for the week.
- Check your stats. Daily, weekly and monthly views show calories, macros including net carbs and fiber, micronutrients and your top food sources.

How MyFoodBuddy works day to day
MyFoodBuddy is built around one action. You describe the meal, and Fiona, the AI coach, does the picking and measuring.
- Say what you ate. Type or speak a normal sentence, like “two eggs, toast with butter and a coffee with oat milk.” Several foods in one message is fine.
- Fiona logs it. She splits the sentence into foods and amounts, looks each one up and shows a card per food with calories, protein, carbs and fat. Tap Log it.
- Fix anything by chatting. Bigger portion, forgot the dressing? Tell Fiona and she updates the entry.
- Scan packaged food. The barcode scanner is included.
- Ask about your day. Fiona answers what is left today or how your week went. Fiber, sugar, sodium and 20+ vitamins and minerals are tracked, and weight, sleep, steps and workouts sync from Apple Health.

Everyday foods are matched in USDA FoodData Central, branded foods in Edamam and barcodes in Open Food Facts. If you give a number yourself, your number wins. See the about page.
How much does Eato cost compared to MyFoodBuddy
Eato’s App Store description says its 7-day trial renews at $79.99 a year. The In-App Purchases list adds a $19.99 monthly plan, a $29.99 three-month plan and several one-year offers. MyFoodBuddy has one plan, $39.99 a year or $7.99 a month after a 7-day free trial, and the price does not change by offer.
| App | Plan | Monthly | Yearly | Includes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MyFoodBuddy | Yearly | n/a | $39.99 | Everything, after a 7-day free trial |
| MyFoodBuddy | Monthly | $7.99 | n/a | Everything, billed monthly |
| Eato | 1-Month VIP | $19.99 | n/a | Full access, billed monthly |
| Eato | 1-Year VIP | n/a | $79.99 | Full access after a 7-day trial, the price stated in the App Store description |

What you would actually pay
| If you want | Eato | MyFoodBuddy |
|---|---|---|
| A full year at the stated price | $79.99 after the 7-day trial | $39.99 after a 7-day free trial |
| A full year on an offer | $19.99, $29.99, $39.99 or $69.99, depending on the offer shown | $39.99, the same for everyone |
| One month | $19.99 | $7.99 |
| Three months | $29.99 (a $19.99 offer is also listed) | $23.97 monthly, or the $39.99 year |
| Free, long term | Not stated on Eato’s pages | Not offered |
Eato’s offers are real money saved if you get one. One App Store reviewer wrote that declining the first special offer led to a cheaper one, and that they paid about $29 for the year. The catch is that you cannot know in advance which price you will see. With MyFoodBuddy the price is on this page.
What do Eato app complaints say about the free trial
People search “eato app reviews complaints” and “eato app refund” for a reason. Most critical reviews on the US App Store are about billing, not the app itself. Here is what they say, and how Eato responded.
- A reviewer in July 2024 wrote they were charged about $40 two days into the 7-day trial. Eato apologized and pointed them to support.
- A reviewer in January 2026 wrote they were charged for a year after canceling the trial and could not get a refund through Apple. Eato replied that refunds are managed by Apple.
- Eato’s own help center says App Store refunds are requested at reportaproblem.apple.com, and that a subscription you no longer want can be canceled there.
To be fair, these are a few reviews out of more than 23,000 ratings that average 4.75. MyFoodBuddy also renews automatically after its 7-day trial, at $39.99 a year or $7.99 a month, so the same advice applies.
How Eato photo logging compares to describing a meal
Photo logging and text logging solve the same problem in different ways. We have not tested either app’s accuracy, so this is how each one says it works.
- Eato AI Scan. Take a photo and Eato identifies the food and logs the calories, then you can add or remove ingredients and change servings. Its help center says to use one plate or bowl per photo, keep everything visible, avoid overlapping foods, and that scans can fail on a weak network or in poor light.
- Eato Describe Food. A newer option where you type what you ate and AI estimates calories and nutrients, with ingredients entered in a text box.
- MyFoodBuddy. Type or say the meal in one sentence. Fiona splits it into foods and amounts and shows a card per food before anything is saved. If you state a number, your number is used. Corrections happen by telling Fiona.

A photo is quick when the plate is in front of you. A sentence works when the meal is already eaten, was in a bag, or hides what matters, like the oil in the pan or the sugar in the coffee. One Eato reviewer says the scanner finds the foods well but portions often need adjusting, and found carb counts hard to correct for keto products.
Does Eato have meal plans, and does MyFoodBuddy
Eato does, and MyFoodBuddy does not. Eato’s Meal Plan tab gives you a weekly plan of breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack options that its help center describes as dietitian-approved, which you can follow as is or customize. A grocery list collects the ingredients for the week.
MyFoodBuddy is a tracker and coach, not a planner. It logs what you actually ate, and you can ask Fiona what is left for the day. If you want to be told what to cook this week, Eato covers that and MyFoodBuddy does not.
Is Eato worth it, and what do reviews say
When we checked on October 18, 2026, Eato had about 23,400 ratings averaging 4.75 on the US App Store and 8,520 reviews averaging 4.5 on Google Play, with 1 million plus downloads there. Eato says it has earned more than three million subscriptions.
The positive reviews on Eato’s site and in the App Store praise how easy the AI scanner makes logging, the barcode scanner and the macro breakdown. The critical ones cover trial billing, portion estimates and, in 2024, not being able to edit logged entries. Eato has since documented how to edit foods, servings and ingredients in its help center.
Is it worth it? On a one-year offer of $19.99 to $39.99 it is cheap for photo logging plus meal plans. At the stated $79.99 a year, or $19.99 a month, it costs twice MyFoodBuddy’s $39.99 a year.

- You want to fix entries by chatting instead of editing ingredients and servings.
- You want an AI coach you can ask what is left today or how your week went.
